Sketch Books

My Last post made me have a look through my old sketch books, in the hope to see that I have improved, and to me its a trip down memory lane of people I have known and not seen for a very long time as well as old Caricatures I have attempted. When I was much younger I use to draw all the time but as you get older and the pressures of work grip you, I would draw less and less. Here are some old and not so old examples of my sketch books

I use to go on a lot of trips abroad on aircraft, and liked to draw and sketch anything , unfortunately most of the  guys didn't like being drawn so I would wait till they went to sleep and do a quick sketch. I have a sketch book full of sleeping crews. I use to do cartoons of funny incidents that would happen and these drawings would help me caricaturize the people involved.

A couple of more recent caricatures from another one of my closed sketch books.

Some more very old detachment sketches and although some of them look like the individual was awake in general they were asleep I just use to put open eyes on them!

and finally a more recent attempt at the fantastic Mr Bean and Boy George with a bit of colour?

I am yet  to really throw paint and ink into my sketch books but would really like to as I have been on some web sites where the sketch books are works of art themselves. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how I can improve my sketch books I am all ears

Keep on Practising.

I have put another entry into Caricaturama 3000 , this week of Steve Carell, but really wanted to do something different after seeing all the wonderful variety of styles that people do but I just did not get the time to sit down and paint. Therefore it was another quick digital colouring of my sketch book drawing.

I quite liked the look of it,  so I printed it out and stuck it in my Sketch Book, which is now full and closed. I have about 4 sketch Books on the go at any one time, all different sizes from A5 to A3, each with about 200 pages in and I use both sides so I get about 400 sketches in each. I do love a bargain so I generally look for the cheapest! (Asda for this one).
I also practice on A4 and A5 Printer paper but throw alot of this away unless I really like it?

I have done a couple of Caricatures of other Fellow artists this week as practise, the first is a Guy called Roy Alberto Gonzalez Vargos, who I believe lives in Costa Rica,

And Raul Curbelo Belen , who lives in Uraguay,

Both of these guys are very talented Artists and live in a fantastic part of the world. I am very envious of people who live in places that have a Hot Summer! ( unlike England, cold and rainy). I like the Idea of sitting out in the sun drawing Caricatures, whilst drinking fresh orange juice, ( I can Dream ?)

Well thats all for now folks, thanks for looking in.

A Slow Week Caricaturing

Its must be post Christmas blues as this week seems to be very slow. I have done my entry to Caricaturama 3000 David Bowie, I did not really find a good reference photo of him until days after I had drawn him and did not want to start again. I have done a Caricature of someones little lad, which I hope they like, they will not see it till Thursday, and a cartoon of Two and a Half Men with Charlie Sheen .

Was really only trying to draw Charlie Sheen but had a quick go at the others for the cartoon. I will see what the next week brings me, best wishes to all for now.

Local Fire Service Cartoon

Well I finally finished a commissioned cartoon of a local Fire Service by one of their colleagues who is leaving after 10 years. Obviously the emergency service they provide is heroic, brave and selfless and they can only be highly commended for what they do. That said there colleague wanted me to make it funny and a bit clumsy and not at all what they are really like. I would of liked to do this Digitally, but he wanted it hand drawn and coloured. I am always nervous doing these as one mistake and I would have to start again!

I have received back a text message saying they all liked it, and I am sure they will look at it with fondness and remember their colleague for years to come.

Tribute Drawing of Pete Postlewaite

I have been meaning to do a Caricature of him for a long time as he has a very interesting and striking face. Now he has gone he will be sadly missed, he was a great actor, in great films, and a great man.

I have also had some paid work I have been working on, but I will have to wait to post it here until it has been given to the people involved. Although I don't think anyone can find this blog so I doubt anyone would see it?  If anyone has any thoughts  in how to increase the easiness of finding my blog, any advice is always welcome. Bye for now.

First Entry of the New Year 2011

The Christmas Holiday and New year has flown by. I really need to get my act together and get busy doing Caricatures. I have a couple to be going on with and I am practising a lot and trying to develop any skill with digital Caricatures. Here is my recent sketch and digital rendering of Amanda Seyfried for Caricaturama 3000. If you get a chance it is well worth a visit to see so many variations and styles on the same theme by both amateurs and professionals alike.

I spent ages on the hair to make it look realistic but it is not right for this piece but I have learnt many new things about photo Shop so it was worth it. If I get time I will try and play around with bits and pieces of it, but I am now looking forward to the next chosen victim?

My New Years resolutions will be to continue Blogging, get a Web Site up and running and possibly lose some weight so I can change the name of my site from FatBoy to SlimBoy. Kind Regards to all.
